I’ve never been the kind of person for an all-inclusive ‘girls’ holiday, so when my friends and I started arranging our travels last summer, a city break soon became the trip of choice. We visited eight cities in three weeks, from Budapest to Barcelona. It was a whistle-stop tour if ever there was one.
The beauty of inter-railing lies in the variety of cities you get to visit. Like Goldilocks finding the perfect porridge, you can try each one on for size in small, bite-size trips, revisiting the ones you love at a later date. The downside to having just a few days in each place is, ironically, the age-old adage of so much to do, so little time…
Trying to cram everything in would be impossible, so it’s best to think of your trip as a highlights reel. There are a whole host of different ways to see a city, with more out-there tours appearing almost every day. From a beer bike tour in Budapest to sightseeing on Segways in Paris, there’s something for everyone. But for me, the best way to see a city will always be by wandering through the streets self-guided, stumbling across unexpected cafes and local haunts.
That said, navigating Barcelona using a map of local McDonalds branches probably isn’t the best method. You end up wasting a fair amount of your precious tourist time asking for directions (endless laughs in a foreign language) and waiting for your brain to switch on and remember how to navigate (thank heavens for Duke of Edinburgh!).
GPSmycity is a super-convenient app that gives you turn-by-turn directions. Even better, you can use it offline, so the thought of a huge data-roaming bill need not send shivers down your spine. The app is available for hundreds of cities, so simply comment which city you would like a promo code for and you could be in with a chance of winning! For the full list of cities, check out the GPSmyCity website.
P.S. The giveaway competition closes on Friday 25th March 2016. Comments made after this date will not be included. 20 winners will be chosen from random and notified within a week of the competition close date. Please note that each promo code expires 28 days after being issued, but the app (once downloaded) does not expire. So you don’t need to worry about booking a last minute flight, just download the app now and book later! Apps are compatible with iOS and Android.
